A roll-out mat is not a mat in pieces

Every multi-purpose gym faces the same question: how to have a tatami in the evening and a clear floor in the morning. Interlocking puzzle mats work well for stand-up striking areas and for surfaces that are never taken up. For throwing disciplines, in a room that is set up and cleared every day, a continuous, seamless surface offers greater stability and safety.

A roll-out mat answers differently. The surface is continuous, with no joint in the middle of the working area, and it rolls up in a few minutes with two people. Dollamur makes these mats under the Flexi-Roll name: it is the range we install most often in combat gyms, because it is the one that takes daily rolling out and putting away without deforming.

Thickness is chosen on the practice, not on perceived comfort. Judo or wrestling, which throw, need more than grappling or Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which work on the ground. We therefore start from the disciplines taught and their share of the timetable - that is what decides, not the budget, because a mat that is too thin is paid for in injuries.

What is underneath matters just as much. A roll-out mat laid straight onto a concrete slab transmits the impact; laid on a floor that resonates, it transmits the noise to the whole building. We deal with the substrate at the same time, and it is often the invisible part of the quotation. See our combat sports world.

Flexi-Wall wall padding follows the same logic: a hall where people are thrown has walls people meet, and dealing with them afterwards means drilling into a finish just laid. We fit them with the floor, in the same project. For installation and follow-up, see installation and maintenance.

What we install

Flexi-Roll mats

Flexi-Roll mats

Roll-out mats with a continuous surface, in several thicknesses and several surface finishes depending on whether people are thrown or work on the ground. They unroll in a few minutes and store upright against a wall.

The format is calculated on the room, not on the catalogue: three rolls covering the area exactly are better than four that overlap and create the step you were trying to avoid.

Flexi-Wall wall padding

Flexi-Wall wall padding

Wall panels fitted where bodies arrive: behind a throwing area, in the corners, around exits. Missing wall padding is the most common defect in the gyms we are asked to put right.

Height is decided by the discipline. A wrestling room is padded higher than a boxing room, where it is the bottom of the wall that takes it.

Installation and upkeep

Installation and upkeep

The substrate is surveyed before ordering: levels, type of floor, isolation where needed. A mat does not make up for a floor, it reveals it.

Upkeep is simple and must be daily: a combat gym mat is cleaned every day, and that is a question of hygiene before it is one of wear. We leave the written protocol at handover.
